Get Your Business Noticed with These Cheap and Creative Marketing Tips!

Running a small business can feel like you’re in an epic scavenger hunt. You’re on a mission to find the best ways to market, promote, and get your name out there to all the people who definitely need your custom laser-engraved wood creations. But instead of trekking through a forest of flyers, QR codes, and social media posts, you’re sprinting through it in high heels (figuratively speaking, of course).

But guess what? I’m surviving, thriving, and actually having fun while doing it. Here’s a peek behind the curtain of how I market Stateline Woodshine – my little business that could – and some creative ways you can start putting yourself out there too. This is how I’m getting the word out about Stateline Woodshine!

1. The QR Code Takeover

I have a confession: I’m obsessed with QR codes. There, I said it. But honestly, who wouldn’t be? They’re like tiny, magic portals that take your potential customers straight to your website or social media page with a single scan. What’s cooler than that? Sure, there was that one time I mistakenly left a QR code on a bathroom stall, but it’s not like anyone used it (I hope).

Still, I’m not afraid to plaster those little guys around town. I use my laser engraver to whip up a quick batch of fun. I make 1-2 inch square or in this case, circle tokens with funny sayings on them. Then I add the QR code, and then I leave them in places where people least expect them – coffee shops, local boutiques, even gas station pumps and bank ATM's. I’m just waiting for someone to scan it and be like, “What the heck is Stateline Woodshine, and why should I care?” And then, BAM – they’re on my website. Mission accomplished. I even set up a hidden page on my website that offers a special discount BUT it can only be accessed when the QR code is scanned! fun huh?

2. Flyers, Flyers, Flyers (The Non-Tacky Kind)

If you’ve been anywhere in town, chances are you’ve seen a flyer or two with that professional touch that makes you stop and think, “This looks like something I should check out.” Flyers are cheap, effective, and surprisingly impactful when done right. I go to the professionals for this. They help me make sure to craft flyers that don’t look like they were printed in someone’s basement (no offense to basement printers, but we’re trying to maintain an image here). Simple design, high-quality paper, and of course, all the right info: where to find me, why they need my custom wood creations, and how to contact me.

And don’t even get me started on all the places I’ve slipped these beauties into. Think local cafes, community centers, churches, and stores. If there’s a place where people gather and read, you can bet there’s a flyer from Stateline Woodshine. It’s like guerilla marketing, but in a really professional, “I’ve got my life together” kind of way.

3. Blogging for Fun and (Free) Exposure

You didn’t think I’d leave out blogging, did you? Writing blog posts is an underrated way to spread the word about what I do while also flexing my writing skills. (Who knew I had any, right?) It’s like a sneaky way of telling my story, offering up some laser-engraving wisdom, and subtly persuading people to buy cool wood products. Plus, with SEO (that magic search engine stuff), people can find my business without me having to do much more than share the link.

You don’t have to be an expert writer. Just talk about what you know, and make sure you throw in a few keywords like “custom laser engravings,” “unique gifts,” and “personalized wood products” so that Google starts to notice you. Side note: Google is my best friend, but also kind of a perfectionist, so I make sure I give it what it wants (aka good content and the right tags). Blogging is basically my therapy. And hey, if a few extra people end up on my website, then it’s all worth it. Here's a blog post I did a while ago about some challenges that I've encountered and my journey along the way, if you want to check it out.

4. Increasing Social Media Awareness (And Being Shameless About It)

Let’s talk about social media, because I know you were waiting for this. I mean, how else would people find out about my custom laser-engraved pet accessories, wood-turned treasures, and personalized gifts? The answer is: they wouldn’t. So, I’ve jumped in headfirst, embracing all things Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. I post like my business depends on it (spoiler: it does).

But here’s the kicker: social media is all about engagement. I don’t just post pretty pictures of my creations and call it a day. Oh no, my friend. I get creative. I share behind-the-scenes content, fun DIY tips, and even get a little snarky with my captions (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a little sass?). And when people comment on my posts, I respond with a smile and maybe a sarcastic joke or two. It’s all about creating that personal connection.

By the way, did I mention that I have a Pinterest board full of amazing laser-engraved ideas? Yeah, I’m kind of a Pinterest pro now. Don’t forget to follow me if you want to join the cool crowd.

5. Partnering With Local Businesses (The Old-Fashioned Way)

Okay, so here’s where I’m going to give you a golden nugget of advice: don’t overlook the power of old-school partnerships. My laser-engraved creations are perfect for businesses that want to stand out, whether they’re Realtors wanting custom cutting boards for their clients as a new house warming gift, or local shops looking for unique gifts. I’ve teamed up with a few places around town, offering them something they can’t find elsewhere: personalized, handmade items that showcase their brand in a way that feels genuine. It’s win-win.

I even offer them a special deal where I provide my creations in exchange for some promotional love. It’s a little barter, a little business savvy, and a lot of creativity – and it’s been working.

6. Events and Pop-Up Shops (Get Ready for the Crowd)

This is my next big move. It’s time for me to get my products out there in front of real, live people. Whether it’s a local craft fair, pop-up shop, or community event, I plan to show up with my custom wood creations in tow. Not only will it give me a chance to talk about my business face-to-face, but it’ll also let me see what people are interested in. And if I’m lucky, maybe I’ll even sell a few things. You know, because that’s the goal.

The Takeaway (and Your Next Step)

Marketing isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about putting yourself out there in as many creative ways as you can. Whether it’s slapping QR codes on everything, writing blogs, or creating eye-catching social media posts, the point is: make people notice you.

So, if you want to join me on my journey, follow me on all the social channels, and of course, check out my website. Trust me, there’s some cool stuff waiting for you. And don’t forget to give my YouTube channel a subscribe for behind-the-scenes fun, and check out my Pinterest page for endless design inspiration. You won’t regret it. (But hey, no pressure.)

Now get out there and get noticed!
