Ever wonder what goes into making those cute, festive earrings you see in small artisan shops? Spoiler alert: It’s not leprechaun magic (though that would be convenient). Instead, it’s a mix of high-tech laser cutting, good old-fashioned hand painting, and a touch of “creative chaos” in our studio at Stateline Woodshine.
Since St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, we thought we’d take you behind the scenes as we create our limited-edition, hand-painted wooden clover earrings. If you’re into jewelry, DIY crafting, or just enjoy watching a husband and wife try not to drive each other crazy in a shared workspace, this one’s for you!
Step 1: Designing the Earrings (Or, "What My Computer Screen Looks Like for Hours")
Every great piece of jewelry starts with a design. Before we even touch a piece of wood, I sit down with my trusty computer and map out the earring shape, frame, and that oh-so-classic lucky clover centerpiece. Using design software, I make sure everything is just the right size—about 1.5 inches for the perfect lightweight dangle.
Fun fact: There’s a fine line between “cute & dainty” and “so big they’ll double as wind chimes.” Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way.
Step 2: Laser Cutting (a.k.a. Where the Magic Happens)
Once the design is set, it’s time for my favorite part—the laser cutter! This high-tech machine carves out the intricate details with precision, leaving us with the wooden cutouts that will soon become earrings.
The laser is mesmerizing to watch, but it’s also loud enough to make you rethink every life choice leading up to this moment. Between the hum of the exhaust fan, the air blowing to cool the laser, and the smell of burning wood, it feels like a mix between a sci-fi experiment and an old-timey woodshop. But hey, that’s just another day in the studio!
Step 3: Handing It Over to the Real Artist
Now that we have perfectly cut wooden pieces, it’s time for my wife to take over. This is where the earrings truly come to life. She hand-paints each one with rich green for the clover and a shimmering gold frame—because St. Patrick himself would approve of a little sparkle.
Watching her paint is oddly satisfying. Each painted stroke turns a simple wooden shape into a tiny masterpiece. If I try to help, I end up banned from the painting table for “reasons.” (Fine. I accept my role as moral support and snack fetcher.)
Step 4: Modeling & Photography (Cue the “Work It” Playlist)
Once the earrings are dry and sealed, it’s time for the final step—photos! My wife puts on her best “I totally do this every day” face and models the earrings for our website.
This is where we make sure you can actually see how gorgeous they look when worn. Natural light, a little bit of staging, and about 57 outtakes later, we have the perfect shots. (Behind-the-scenes secret: There’s always a dog photobombing at least one.)
Step 5: You Wear Them & Get All the Compliments
That’s it! Our hand-crafted, laser-cut, hand-painted St. Patrick’s Day earrings are ready to ship out. They’re lightweight, festive, and just the right amount of “lucky charm” for your holiday outfit.
We also made a timelapse video of this process. You can watch it here. Want a pair? Check them out in our shop before they disappear like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Shop Here
